11th of March 2021. The symposium once again provided a platform for Scottish Funded Projects to showcase what they have done in the year and connect with both Malawian and Scottish Government officials.

This year’s symposium had over 70 participants joining virtually from across Malawi and Scotland. We were also honoured to have as our guest of honour the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon. Eisenhower Mkaka. Other Notable guests included the Scottish Minister of International Development Hon Jenny Gilruth.

In his speech Hon Mkaka thanked the Scottish Government for their swift response to Malawi’s call to the International Community for support, in the wake of second wave of Covid-19 as a significant rise in cases left the country in a health crisis. He also pledged Governments continued support to the partnership between the two countries.

In her speech the Scottish Minister for International Development Hon Jenny Gilruth, hailed the shared history of partnership and working together that Malawi and Scotland have had over the years, but however admitted that this history had been characterised by inequality and that a recognition of this has guided her attempts at shifting the power in the development programme to partner countries. This has been exemplified by a transformation in the current funding criteria which will allow organisations from partner countries to apply directly for funding from the Scottish Government.

The symposium also premiered videos from 4 partner organisations that that are receiving funding from the Scottish Government. You can watch these videos and the entire Symposium Video here
